The inaugural TIPC Conference, marking the culmination of activities for the pilot year, saw Consortium Members reiterate their commitment to exploring and developing knowledge on Transformative Innovation Policy (TIP). By developing new thinking on science, technology and innovation, governments and academics hope to co-create a new approach to policy that will bring about change to meet such societal goals as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
All founding members of the Consortium – the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex; the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems, VINNOVA; the Research Council of Norway; the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation, TEKES; the South African National Research Foundation, NRF; and the Colombian Administrative Department of Science, Technology & Innovation, COLCIENCIAS – indicated their desire to embark on the new TIPC five-year programme (5YP).
TIPC Members confirm their commitment to the 5 Year Programme
The TIPC 5YP ‘Transformative Lab’ comprises of 5 key elements: experimentation; research; training and capacity building; evaluation and deep learning, which will be coordinated and translated by a strong management and communications function/
Johan Schot, Director of SPRU and TIPC founder said: “The conference showed positive commitment from all members. Crucially, they recognise that science, technology and innovation policy needs to respond to the SDGs. We currently have no ‘recipes’ for implementation, hence the need to experiment with new solutions. Our 5YP Transformative Lab is about policy experimentation for transformative change. This is new territory and central to TIPC’s next chapter. Although the commitment is for 5 years, TIPC will be a temporary cognitive space to try out the fresh ideas . This space is designed for mutual learning between countries and organisations who want to take up the challenge of implementing transformative innovation policy bringing about true system change.
